What Is A Warming Drawer? What Does It Do?

By  Genelia

Most of you in your lives can experience or relate to what I go through.

In my family, all of us have a busy schedule and we eat at different times.

During my free time, sometimes, I cook food early, but no one will show up. Sounds boring, right?

More than that, it looks bad to see the reactions of my family members, when they eat food that has become cold.

They lost appetite for my cooking over a period of time.

During these awkward scenarios, I literally felt there must be a way to keep the food warm and good till the time it gets served.

Warming Drawer

You may ask me why not use a microwave oven? I cover the answer to your question in the latter part of this article.

Then I came to know about these “warming drawers” and started using it to store my cooked food, till I serve it to my family members.

I can feel the joy and happiness in my dear one’s face after eating the food fresh.

What Is A Warming Drawer?

Here is the answer you are looking for.

It’s a kitchen appliance used to keep the food warm even after cooking until it gets served.

It can be fitted in between just below the hob and above the oven. Like a cupboard, it can be pulled out with the help of a handle.

The above arrangement need not be in this exact order, maybe you can place the drawer below the oven too.

Electronic control panels are located in the interior of the warming drawer for access.

Here is a tip for you: Best idea is to buy the warming drawers, cooktop, and oven from the same company or brand.

In the case of stainless steel kitchen equipment, a stainless steel warming drawer would be a perfect match.

It gives a neat look and a good feel for your eyes.

What Does a Warming Drawer Do?

In the introductory part of the article, I told you, I don’t prefer the microwave oven for heating.

The answer to it is here. How this warming drawer supersedes microwave oven or a toaster? And what it actually does?

No doubt, microwaves can heat food like a warming drawer but comes with certain disadvantages.

When you use a microwave, mostly you eat less nutrient food as the heat takes away most of the healthy nutrients in it.

Toasters are a good option but they are not suitable for large gatherings or to keep many plates.

Warming drawer, on the other hand, comes with various advantages. These are:

  • Saves you time
  • Perfect for busy families
  • Can warm plates and bowls before dinner
  • Can cook and warm multiple dishes at a time
  • Can be used in outdoor grilling area or even in a bathroom for warming towel
  • Can keep freshly baked pastries or rolls warm for a dessert treat after dinner

Factors to Consider While Purchasing

Make sure to measure the dimensions of the vacant area in your kitchen and double-check it, so that the new warming drawer fits aptly.

Also take note of the number of maximum plates, dishes, cups, etc you need to keep in the warming drawer.

Most of the warming drawers in the market are available in height ranging from 14cm to around 29cm. So you will need to decide accordingly as per your requirements.

Nowadays, the warming drawers also come with an electronic control panel to adjust the settings as per our needs. So check that for sure.

Some of the other key aspects to be present in the panel are as follows:

Fans – It will help to regulate the heat circulation evenly in the drawer.

Defrost – This feature helps to defrost the frozen food quickly.

Timer – It helps in the auto cut-off of the heat once the fixed time has elapsed.

Temperature Increase or Decrease – Adjust the temperature within the range of 30 to 80 (degree Celsius).

The temperature limit can vary for different brands.

Freestanding or Slide-In Warming Drawers?

Do you want to buy a built-in and custom looking warming drawer?

It’s good to go for Slide-in type as it suits the most for your personal use.

Freestanding types are generally meant for commercial usage.

Precautions While You Use a Warming Drawer

While installing warming drawers could be highly beneficial for your family, it will also use your valuable cabinet and storage space that can be customized better according to your family’s day to day requirements.

This means you should always install them if you really need them.

When installing also make sure that you use them with care so that you can enjoy maximum benefits out of them.

Few things you need to consider when using them are:

1· Flammable items, plastic materials should not be used.

2· Never touch the interior of warming while it is in use as it will burn your skin.

3· While opening it, open it very little and let the hot steam escape before placing or taking away food from it.

When Should You Not Choose A Warming Drawer?

Having known all the “pros” of the warming drawers, it’s also good to know when you should not be choosing it for your kitchen.

You should skip this appliance in your kitchen if:

  • You have a smaller kitchen
  • You have a tight budget for kitchen renovation
  • You only want to host parties very few times a year

Above all, if you do not want to enjoy all the benefits of warming drawers listed above, you can completely skip an idea of installing it in your kitchen.

You can then make use of your space for something more functional for your family.

Food for thought – Always it is good to think out of the box, see whether you can use the warming drawer apart from heating food?

Yes! Definitely, it can be used.

One such idea is to use to warm towel or bathrobes. It’s a good feel to wrap you in a warm bathrobe or towel.

Hopefully, after reading this article, you would have decided to buy a warming drawer if you already don’t own one.
